Story of Jump Frog, Jump!

Hello World! This is development blog of Jump Frog, Jump! Where you can peek to development of this small indie game.

Jump Frog, Jump! started one hangoverish morning in Kallio, Helsinki. I had been playing this small cookie clicker copy cat called 10 billion wives on my iPad for several hours. I was addicted to it’s simplicity. Though it was getting boring quite fast since there was no challenge and only reward was getting bigger number faster and cute anime drawings of the wives.

I started thinking something simple that I could play for longer time. It should be hard enough and it should give feeling of accomplishment fast. Something like Flappy Bird and Swing Copters have done it. Making yet another clone of those two games didn’t feel like thing to do.

What could be natural action in your touch phone what hasn’t been done as game yet? Swiping. It is something that can be used to many ways. It has direction, acceleration and set of points in path. Games like Flight Control and Draw Race have done it quite succesfully. Both very addictive games. I highly recommend.

I wanted to have something even more simpler. I had idea of jumping between some sort of platforms and it needed to be with just swipes. So I created square to move with swiping and group of random circles to try to hit on. It felt like jumping frogs. Jumpy Frog was created. Name being crude copy from Flappy Bird. After few hours of development it started to feel like game I might play more. After four hours of being addicted to that basic gameplay it was idea good enough. Too bad Jumpy Frog was already taken so I went with idea of Run Forrest, Run or Run Lola Run with new name and settled with Jump Frog, Jump!

First version of was created in less than 4 days in total. From which two where used to code the game, one for graphics and sounds and lastly day to learn how Apple Store and Google Store publishing process was done.

First release was very crude and simple. No sounds and just basic gameplay. It was perfect version to validate if other people liked it too. So I made small Facebook post which found it’s way to 10000 people from which about 100 installed the game :)

This is the start of the journey of Jump Frog, Jump!
